Presidents Christmas Message
With this my last email publication for 2006, from my family to yours – I take this opportunity to wish all our 4RAR Association Members, wives, and partners a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
2006 from my reading has been very similar since our raising two years ago here in NSW. Difficult it is at times, I am sure you will agree that our work in obtaining the best outcome for our future will never be done. We need to be ever vigilant of our greatest asset – ‘our membership’– and maintaining a high profile, not only with our former members and their families of 4RAR, 4RAR/NZ(Anzac) and 2/4RAR, but also our former/current serving members and their families of 4RAR(Cdo).
As most of you would be aware – at our AGM in July this year - a number of changes were put in place, not the least of which was the abolishment of a fee to be a member of our Assoc. It has not had the response I would have hoped for in respect to developing a Register of new Members, but it is still early days and the Battalion in it’s current operational phase, to put it bluntly has not had time to come up for air. A number of issues are on the agenda for next year – one being hopefully the establishment of a National Newsletter. We in NSW and QLD have agreed to this, and I do hope all other States come on board as I believe only good things can come from it. (Submissions are on the table for further discussion) Similarly, we are forever upgrading and improving our information highway which is our great website. The feedback I receive as a result of our website is very encouraging to say the least. Zunt, on behalf of all members – we say Thankyou.
There were a number of highlights throughout the year, being a successful operational display and competition birthday hosted by 4RAR (Cdo), participating in the largest Battalion on Parade for Anzac Day, the opening of the 4RAR (Cdo) Museum to name a few. One highlight stands out above all others was to witness a Sergeant who is a current serving member being awarded the Star of Gallantry. He was the first soldier to receive this award since its introduction in 1991 and ranks only one behind the VC in Australian Military Honours and a current serving Corporal being awarded the Gallantry Medal. I also further witness the Governor General announce that our current Battalion would also be honoured with two Unit Citations. The Medals and Citations were for our members and Battalions heroic actions in Afghanistan. A truly remarkable feat by any soldier’s standards – which made all of us former 4RAR members very, very proud as our old Battalion, now a Commando Battalion creates history.

As 2006 draws to a close I would like to take this opportunity to firstly thank our Esteemed Patron and all the Management Committee for your efforts and assistance throughout 2006. Even though their names are not displayed above for obvious reasons, I similarly am grateful and say Thankyou to the Ex-Officio current serving member/s on the Management Committee of our Assoc here in NSW.
Further, may I also be permitted to take this opportunity to extend to each of you and your families the wish for a Happy Christmas and a safe and healthy New Year. I extend this wish to all other 4RAR State Associations and the Assoc of 4th Inf Bn and their respective Executive, Committee and Membership.
Also at this time of the year, would you please spare a thought for some of your old mates and their family members who are not traveling too well due to ill health or suffering a recent bereavement. Give them a call and let them know you are thinking of them.
Finally don’t forget to get your Registration Forms in for our Melbourne Reunion in Feb 2008. There is a link to our Reunion by accessing the above Website.
Have a safe one and see ya all in 2007.
